Black Soldier Fly Training in Buea: A 3-Day Journey of Impact

Dear Green Farmlands Community,

From the 23rd to the 25th of July 2025, the city of Buea came alive with excitement and purpose as Green Farmlands hosted its most hands-on, transformative Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming training yet.

For three days, the Young Farmers’ Training Center, housed within the Regional Delegation of MINADER – Buea, echoed with questions, insights and above all, a hunger for knowledge.

We welcomed 17 passionate participants: a mix of smallholder farmers, agricultural students, and aspiring agripreneurs, who travelled from Douala, Dibombari, Limbe, Yaoundé, and of course, Buea. What they experienced was more than a workshop. It was a movement

DAY 1: Setting the Foundation

Led by our founder and CEO, Atim Mbah Patience, Day 1 began with energy and vision. Participants were introduced to:

  • The life cycle of the Black Soldier Fly
  • The economic and environmental benefits of BSF farming
  • Real-world applications of BSF larvae in waste management and feed production

But it wasn’t just theory. From the very first day, we went practical. Participants observed larvae at different stages and explored egg collection setups.

The enthusiasm was electric, and the turnout exceeded expectations

DAY 2: Going Deeper

Day 2 was led by our Project Coordinator, Faniran Ngobesing, alongside Atim. This day was all about deep diving into the practical aspects of BSF farming:

  • BSF egg sourcing techniques
  • How to hatch and incubate eggs under controlled conditions
  • Preparing nutrient-rich feed for 5 Day Old Larvae (5DOL)
  • Handling and harvesting best practices

Participants were fully immersed. Working in teams, they handled BSF materials directly, learned how to manage waste inputs, and gained firsthand experience in larvae handling and environmental control.

The sessions were intense, but rewarding.

DAY 3: Value Addition & Real-World Application

On the final day, our Project Assistant, Fortu Rahab, took the lead. Her session focused on three critical areas:

  • Common challenges BSF farmers face, and sustainable solutions
  • How to dry BSF larvae using different methods (sun drying, solar dryers, oven drying, etc.) to add value
  • Proper inclusion rates of BSF larvae in poultry, fish, and pig feed, giving participants real feed formulation insights

The training concluded with a powerful certificate presentation ceremony, where each of the 17 participants received official recognition for their commitment and growth.

It was a proud moment for all of us.

A Heartfelt Thank You

This training would not have been possible without the generous support of:

  • +1 Global Fund
  • Echoing Green
  • The Roddenberry Foundation

And a very special thank you to the Regional Delegation of MINADER in Buea for providing a welcoming space, and to our incredible Green Farmlands team for their tireless efforts in planning and execution.

What’s Next?

This training was just the beginning. Green Farmlands is on a mission to equip young farmers, women, and underserved communities with sustainable agritech solutions like BSF farming.

Stay tuned for our next training location, and if you’d like to partner, volunteer, or sponsor a future cohort, we’d love to hear from you.

Together, we’re not just farming.
We’re building resilience. Creating income. And restoring the planet.

With purpose,
The Green Farmlands Team
